the hearts and laserbeams blog!

recently blogger decided we can't publish my blog to my own website anymore so here we are! pardon the dust, and please visit us online at www.heartsandlaserbeams.com!

hearts and laserbeams is the wacky good-times art and design by me, steph calvert. i team up with robots, cupcakes, and stick people to show people art isn’t all about seriousness, missing ears, and deep thoughts; it can actually be tons of fun.

all the news that's fit to print and even news that's not

such a busy busy time right now, you know? last night was just what i needed - came home from work and made a pot of chili, did some knitting and crocheting, ate dinner, and just conked out cold on the couch around 930pm. i heart being an old fogey! it will balance out nicely with going crazy at the flogging molly show with danielle and her friends tonight.

now get ready for a bunch of reasons you should hit l.a.'s bazaar bizarre this december!

soooooo exciting - i just got done ordering my first postcards ever from overnight print, hopefully everyone loves em and buys fifty million sets! i printed up the forgotten destination series, including this shoutout to westminster and two other never-before seen designs!

also on the arts&crafts show front, i'm almost done with my 6th crochet cupcake, but blast! i ran outta choco-brown yarn last night. and the only place i've found that carries that bernat yarn is walmart. sooo... guess where i'm going today. wish me luck and godspeed.

aaaaaand by the end of the weekend the next set of 10 make a plates will be set up and ordered! i never got around to putting up pics of the first go-round, but when the show gets closer rest assured i will. and anything that doesn't sell there will be available in my website's shop for all your dinnerware needs!

there's not much else i'm doing for baz biz as far as making new stuff, just because between melissa and i, i think there's gonna be a really good amount right there. the other big project for this thing is to figure out where to get cardboard/cello envelopes so i can dust off some of the archives from scad's intro to printmaking class and maybe a doodle or two, and make a couple of bucks on em!

cross your fingers for lady scouts, we also applied to be in felt club's xmas show... we find out mid-october if we're in - figure it's a good idea cuz it's just one week before baz biz, and more opportunity to get our stuff out there!

also, i have to tell you i'm so effing excited for the wedding - invitations have gone out, rsvps are coming back, and this is gonna be one rockin party!

annnnnnd josh and i are working on plans to join forces on a joint website (puff puff pass) in the new year... i think we've settled on a name to be disclosed in the near future. it'll be sorta like my art site but better - easier to find shit, it'll have our blogs on there, a new improved store, a separate resume/portfolio section for me... all kinds of good shit. can't wait to start building it! and i can't wait to start harassing friends to explain technical mumbojumbo i don't understand!

there'll be time enough for countin' when the dealings done

remind me to tell you later about one of my most favoritest high school memories that includes kenny roger's "the gambler".

that song just came on at work, and it always makes me smiley and nostalgic.

also, if don't you forget to tune in to kdhr.net today at 2pm pacific time for danielle's radio show!!! if you forget i will personally come to your house and kick your ass!!!

the elephant in the middle of the room...

so i've never really heard of banksy before, but he had an art show on friday and we were able to go check it out during work. i loved his stuff, kinda in that same vein as donny miller - very ironic, random, funny cool art. if you happen to be in the la area, i think the show's only going on until tomorrow, so get your ass over there!

but if you can't actually go, check out the pics i took of some of my favorite stuff that was there...

9.12.2006

thank god i'm a country boy

here's a quick little thing i did for this week's illustration friday - nothing really behind it, just trying to get back into the swing of doing it every week, you know?

i kinda dig it, who doesn't love polka dots and happy faces? if i spent more time on it i would've added a cow or two for your cowtipping enjoyment.

word on the street some hooligans are comin' to town in november for josh and i's wedding, and i am so jazzed i just crapped my pants. gross!!! i almost feel like i need to bust out the elvira wig and watch a trainable video in celebration!

also, why can't it be friday already?

don't forget, you should probably buy your own copy of harold and kumar go to white castle so you can see the best movie moment ever over and over again. of course i'm talking about doogie howser doing blow off of a hooker's ass while hanging out the sunroof of a jetta as it speeds on down the road. the movie was on tv and i got to see a couple of minutes of it before heading out to dog school with jimmy, and it was awesome as always.

the movie, not the dog school. today was finals at dog school, and jimmy decided it'd be hilarious if he pretended he didn't remember any of the crap we've been working on for the past 8 weeks. which i guess is sort of an exaggeration... he did get 126 out of 200. but he most certainly did not bring home a trophy and for that he is GROUNDED!!!

aaaaaaand you smell like poop. the end!

crikey...

the crocodile hunter dying makes me sad... i'm seriously irritated by the reports i'm hearing that the news media's talking about releasing the footage that was shot when he got stung by the ray. how messed up is society that they want to see someone they dug watching on tv die?

there's something kinda poetic and bittersweet that he went doing what he loved most. i hope i die doing what i love most someday.

so what if what i love most is your mom?

AHAHAHAHHAHAHAH that is terrible.

fyi, my car's as filthy as blanche dubois

i know i keep saying it, but it's weird how busy everything has been lately. like i've had the last three days off from work but i still didn't have time for proper internet shenanigans because i was off doing other things... and you keep hearing this one, but i swear it's true - after the new year i will be keeping up a lot better with the blogs and the internet in general. in the meantime, here's whats been up this week:

i'm trying to get better at freehand-drawing things with my wacom tablet... here's my illustration friday piece for "safe":

i kinda dig how it turned out - just a quick little thing that makes me smile.

now let's get back to talking about my dog. more specifically, the dog park. have you seen the remake of the omen? totally crappy horror movie, one of the dumbest i've ever seen. but the image of that black satan dog just standing there, watching julia stiles... i have to tell you it did creep me out. even creepier, fast forward to a couple of days ago when i took jimmy to the park. there were these two old dudes there, and their dogs were off-leash trained. so as these two guys were leaving, their dogs walked out with them towards the parking lot. but the black one, the one that looked like the jackal from the omen, he just stopped and stared at us in the park. i present exhibit a:

creepy. creepy. creepy.

also, whenever there's a doberman running around the park i picture trav saying "I FEEL LIKE I'M IN A DAMN MADONNA VIDEO!" i dunno why i picture him saying that, but that's just how it goes.

mmmmm.... what else i got. i printed wedding invitations yesterday - so exciting! and work continues on putting stuff together for bazaar bizarre - i finished my 3rd cupcake while watching this week's project runway. i'm hopin to have 6 done before december, which might not be that hard to do if michelle makes it over with season 2 of desperate housewives today...

AND, if you're an ocean view high school fan you should probably watch out for a cheerleader named emily - those boxes they stand on during games, i painted hers this week and it will rock your socks off!

tonight i think i'm gonna hit up meltdown comics in hollywood, cuz i hear donny miller's having an art show/book signing and his stuff cracks me up to no end. so i may just have to go get a derogatory autograph from the guy to add to the collection...

and i think that's all i got. i'm off to teach danielle how to drive stick shift!
