the hearts and laserbeams blog!

recently blogger decided we can't publish my blog to my own website anymore so here we are! pardon the dust, and please visit us online at www.heartsandlaserbeams.com!

hearts and laserbeams is the wacky good-times art and design by me, steph calvert. i team up with robots, cupcakes, and stick people to show people art isn’t all about seriousness, missing ears, and deep thoughts; it can actually be tons of fun.

my life's most surreal moment so far

so yesterday we drove down to the north park craft mafia's spring line up show, and i experienced the weirdest thing ever!

if you've ever worked at a large company, or any company that has websense website blocking set up, you've probably seen a page like this before:

it usually calls out why the website you're trying to look at is blocked, usually putting it in a category. (for some reason, 99% of the blocked websites i've encountered in my corporate life were categorized tasteless... maybe because it was all youtube/myspace/celeb gossip garbage...)

so as josh and i are driving to san diego, i'm lookin out the passenger window, and from the freeway i see the websense company's building. and my brain immediately thought 'oh that building must be blocked'. and then my brain made me quickly look away, because obviously if it's blocked i'm not supposed to be looking at it.

and then i realized what just happened, told joshy, and we had a good laugh over it. logos are pretty powerful, people.

in other news, that song on the kill bill volume 1 soundtrack that sounds a whole lot like flight of the bumblebee has an amazing way of making me work at breakneck speeds. GO GO GO!!!!

AHAAHAHAHAHAHA yes!!!!

last week i was chattin with jen online and she mentioned all the flooding that was going on in missouri and how she was worried about her mom, and i was all... uh... what flooding?

it turns out i've fallen completely out of touch with current events again.

so today i was listening to knx1070 online while i was working, and just a little while ago i noticed one of the people on the air had the raddest name ever. i wanna shake her parents hands this name is so badass.

the name is robin banks.

like you're robbin' banks.

like you're a bank thief.

like you're effing awesome.

i'm changing my name to robin banks. and people will say, wait, you're the robin banks on the newsradio? and i'll tell them yes. yes i am. you should probably give me some money.

dear sees candy...

dear sees candies,

i heart your candy like no one's business, and have all my candy-eating life! my awesome mom-in-law sent us one of your fancypants candyfilled easter baskets for easter, and i just have the tiniest of bones to pick with you.

sees candies, i think one of your chocolate egg decorators is a drunk. i present to you, exhibit a:

look how that little sugar flower is practically falling off the side of the egg. and it's not even a whole flower! this dude isn't even trying to hide his illness anymore, he's just having his buddy jose cuervo phone it in while he stumbles around the flower-making machine in a stupor.

i'm not saying the egg wasn't delicious, i'm just saying maybe this dude needs help. and maybe you should send me more choco eggs to make up for it. i think like 50 should do it.

thanks so much, you're a peach!

steph

today's debate...

a couple of weeks ago, josh and i were on our way home from popeye's on 7th street, and there was a billboard up that caught our attention.

it was all white, and said "i'm so over you sarah marshall" in a handwritten sharpie-like font. like this:

we dismissed it as a teaser billboard for an upcoming teen movie of the john tucker must die variety, and the theory seemed to stick as we saw more of these billboards that said things like "my mother never liked you sarah marshall" and "you suck sarah marshall".

but then last night, josh and his buddy jay went to the website that's listed at the bottom of each of these billboards, and now we're not sure but it might be an actual for real thing.

or is it a stunt for a movie?! you make the call!!!

cute as hell...

you may or may not know, but my sister danielle has a radio show on her college's online station on tuesdays, 4-530pm.

now that i'm work-from-home girl, i get to listen to it again, hooray! she always plays a fun mix of stuff and almost always plays tenacious d when i ask her to, and for that she gets 20 gold stars.

so yesterday i tuned in, and it was the most adorable thing ever - every time, and i mean EVERY time the music stopped and danielle started talking again, our dog jimmy would run into the room with his tail wagging, looking for her.

it got to the point where he started looking in all of josh's hiding spots he uses when they're playing hide and seek - is danielle hiding in the shower? is she behind the door? where the eff is she, i can hear her i know she's somewhere!!!

it was awesome. the end. tune in next week when i find out if their call-in phone line still works, signalling the return of prank calls to the show hooray!

awesome, awesome, awesome

ok i can't find footage of this and it makes me so angry!!!

typically i'm not the sort who watches dancing with the stars and the bachelor and all that... but i had channel 7 on last night and forgot about tv for a while, and then when i came back to it adam carolla was dancing the mutha effin fox trot! WTF!!! and then i watched the rest of the episode.

my recap: dancing with the stars is really just kind of weird, and steve guttenburg is either high, or creepy or both and everyone should stay about 50 feet away from him at all times.

and then came the bachelor, which i'm slightly more inclined to watch because it involves completely trashy television. the highlight in last night's premiere was one trashy broad from chicago who got COMPLETELY PLASTERED at that first night's meet your bachelor and try not to get sent home first party. she had bleach blond hair, huge fake boobs and a bright blue sequiny dress, and swore up a storm.

at one point when the dude was talking to another girl she comes up and in her drunken stuper says something completely unintelligible while trying to put something in his pocket. you hear the guy telling her "i don't have a pocket there" a couple of times, and then she tucks this note or whatever into the waistband of his pants and leaves. leaves to go pass out from being the drunkest at the party. yay! so he goes back to talking to this other girl and they end up deciding to look at whatever it is drunkho left him and IT WAS HER UNDERWEAR!

so... uh... she got sent home last night. and the show got boring again. will i tune in next week? stay tuned to find out!!!

everything is going to be okay

i know you were worried - i'm about 50% less sick today than i was yesterday, and the wisdom-tooth swelling for some reason decided to start really going away about an hour after we got home from dinner last night. so things are looking up!

i'm trying to get better about blogging, like back on the almost daily routine. so let me tell you about switchplate covers. i started this little project the other night and had to stop cuz i was just too ill, but i'm almost done with it now - i've been taking some cool patterned papers (wrapping paper and stuff like that) that i've been saving for a while, and decoupagin' em onto lightswitch and outlet covers. they've turned out pretty cool for a first try! if you do it yourself, i definitely recommend using thinner paper instead of heavy scrapbooking paper. the heavier paper does better on the front side, when you're trying to get it to look smooth and all that, but the back side where you have to cut the holes out and finish everything off is just much much easier with thinner paper.

that's all i have to say about that, the end! if my phone didn't hate my blog i'd post a pic but well, you know...

aaaaaaaaaaand we're back

it seems like i should have more time to tell y’all what’s been going on these days but instead i’ve been runnin around like a chicken with my head cut off getting organized and situated...

so my biggest update is i quit my day job and am now a fulltime hearts and laserbeams employee! i’m doing a lot of freelance design for lots of different companies and i’m totally loving it!

and i’m starting to put my merchandise in stores! you can see some of my tees at the kids are alright (at their new long beach location), and they’ll be carrying more of my stuff later this month! if you’re in florida, i’ve also got some rad robots with cupcakes prints at cupcakes a go-go!

aaaaaaaand what else - if you’re not doing anything this weekend you should go to the l.a. derby dolls match on saturday night! visit the hearts and laserbeams table, right next to sparkledarkko’s table of awesome soaps and lotions!

oooo also i got three wisdom teeth pulled yesterday - i don’t know if it was because the roots weren’t super long and scary, but i don’t hurt that much. i just slept a ton yesterday after the anesthesia and vicodin and whatever else they gave me to calm my ass down after watching the video that said needles about 20 times in 5 minutes. i am THE biggest needle wuss ever in existence, people.

is that it? i dunno... i feel like i should have more to say since it’s been so long. can i tell you josh and i are gonna go see the savannah kids in april and we’re superjazzed - kings inn here we come!

aaaaaaaand whatelse. josh and i have become mighty putty whores. for reals, the stuff is magic! we’ve used it to hang smoke alarms and fix a bookshelf and it works really really well!

yeah that’s right, i’m ending my blog with a review of an as seen on tv item. i’ll give ya a little hint, you can buy it at target.
